Unlike many contemporary directors who are wishing to make commercial and experimental films, Nag Ashwin made legendary actress Savitri’s biopic titled Mahanati as his second directorial film.
It was not an easy task for him to pen the life story of Savitri, since he adores her as an actress, but had very less information about her personal life, he approached various sources to gather information about Savitri. And one person who helped him in scripting was her daughter Vijaya Chamundeswari.
Apparently, Vijaya Chamundeswari has a soft corner on her father Gemini Ganesan. There were allegations that Ganesan is the reason behind Savitri becoming an alcohol addict and ending her life abruptly after being in coma for 19 months.
In the film Mahanati, Gemini Ganesan is not projected as villain. Gemini Ganesan is shown as an ardent devotee of Savitri who loved his second wife from the bottom of his heart and the director shows situations which made him to turn jealous of her.
In fact, Dulquer Salmaan played the role of Gemini Ganesan quite persuasively. He looked as charismatic as Gemini Ganesan during his heydays.
We love him when he is in love with Savitri played by Keerthy Suresh and we hate him a bit when he ditches the Mahanati.However, movie buffs will not have any hard feelings against Gemini Ganesan as the film showed him in good light, except for few episodes.
