In a landmark judgement, the Jodhpur court today convicted self-styled godman Asaram Bapu in the sensational case of rape of a 16-year-old minor girl. Asaram had allegedly raped the girl at his ashram in Manai village near Jodhpur, Rajasthan, in 2013. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced soon.
Asaram was charged with raping the girl who hails from Shahajahanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He has been jailed for the last 4 years and all his 12 bail applications were rejected by the trial court, the Rajasthan High Court and the Supreme Court.
The court also convicted two others accused in the case. Security has been beefed up at the Jodhpur Central Jail where Asaram is lodged. The centre had earlier issued directives to the Rajasthan, Gujarat and Haryana governments to deploy additional forces to prevent any violence by Asaram’s supporters.
