Acclaimed Cinematographer KU Mohanan Advocates Realism for “Family Star”

March 28, 2024

Celebrated cinematographer KU Mohanan, known for his work on Bollywood blockbusters like “Don” and “Talaash,” is set to enthrall Telugu audiences with his upcoming project, “Family Star.” Mohanan, who marked his Tollywood debut with the critically acclaimed “Maharshi,” recently opened up about his approach to the film’s visuals during a media interaction.

In a refreshing departure from the norm, Mohanan emphasizes a focus on realistic visuals for “Family Star.” He sheds light on the common tendency in commercial cinema to prioritize vibrant colors and excessive lighting. For “Family Star,” however, Mohanan has opted for a more nuanced approach, employing lighting strategically to ensure each frame exudes authenticity. This emphasis on natural visuals and a carefully selected color palette complements the heartwarming narrative centered around a middle-class protagonist.

Explaining his decision to join the project, Mohanan cites two key factors – the production house and the lead actor. He expresses his enthusiasm about collaborating with Dil Raju Productions, a renowned banner he has previously worked with, and his admiration for Vijay Deverakonda, the film’s lead star. While acknowledging the attractive remuneration, Mohanan doesn’t shy away from highlighting his artistic motivations.

Mohanan extends his observations to the broader Telugu film industry, acknowledging its position as the frontrunner in Indian cinema. However, he identifies a potential for stagnation in terms of visual storytelling. He emphasizes the importance of directors embracing diverse visions and innovative storytelling techniques, as this would directly translate into groundbreaking visual experiences crafted by cinematographers.

“Family Star,” directed by Parasuram and featuring Vijay Deverakonda and Mrunal Thakur in lead roles, with music composed by Gopi Sundar, is slated for release on April 5th. Mohanan’s focus on visual realism and his call for creative exploration within Telugu cinema have sparked a conversation, raising the anticipation for “Family Star” and its potential to redefine visual storytelling in the industry.
