Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi No More

Jagadguru Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya, the 69th Shankaracharya Guru and head of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, is no more. He was 82. He breathed his last on Wednesday. He was suffering from breath-related ailments.

He was admitted to a hospital on Jan 14, 2018 and was treated for a day and subsequently discharged. He had resumed his normal activities and had granted darshan to devotees.

After over a month, his breath-related problems escalated and he succummbed to the ailment.Shri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham was established by Sri Adi Sankara in the year 482 BC. It has been the most popular Peetham since ages.

Born on 18 July 1935 as Subramanyam Mahadeva Iyer, he was nominated by his predecessor, Chandrashekarendra Saraswati Swamigal, as his successor and was given the pontifical title Sri Jayendra Saraswathi on 22 March 1954. He will now be succeeded by Vijayendra Saraswati.
