Mission 2019: Sonia Gandhi hosts dinner to opposition parties

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi hosted an informer dinner for opposition leaders of country on Tuesday night, in an effort to bring all the anti-BJP parties under one roof. The congress leaders who attended the meeting include former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, opposition leader in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and another senior leader Randeep Singh Surjewala.

Although leaders who attended dinner rubbed it off saying it was just an informal bonding of several opposition leaders, the development clearly hints that Congress is attempting to form a strong anti-Modi front to face the coming 2019 polls, and at the same time beats down the third front talks.

Congress party president Rahul Gandhi said, in a tweet, ‘Fabulous dinner tonight, hosted by Sonia Gandhi ji. an opportunity for leaders from different political parties to meet and bond, informally. Much political talk but much more important – tremendous positive energy, warmth and genuine affection.’

Notable guests to the dinner were Omar Abdullah, Sharad Pawar, Tejashwi Yadav, Kanimozhi, D Raja (CPI), Satish Mishra of BSP, Sudip Bandhopadhyay of Trinamool Congress and Ram Gopal Yadav of SP.

Prior to this meeting, Sonia Gandhi in her recent interviews said there is a necessity for opposition parties to work together at national level. KCR was seen emerging in South India after he announced to initiate a collaboration of local parties against both national parties – Congress and BJP. KCR got support from various parties in first place, and he is set to meet leaders of regional parties and bureaucrats after the ongoing budget session in Telangana.

With the collaboration of all these parties, Congress is wanting to make a comeback in national politics and this is the first diplomatic step towards it.
