Nirmala Sitharaman has become the first woman defence minister to take a sortie in Sukhoi. She has taken the sortie on Wednesday (Jan 17, 2018) in the Indian Air Force’s frontline combat jet Sukhoi 30 MKI from the air base in Jodhpur. Clad in pilot’s G-suit, Nirmala sat in the cockpit. She was seen in the rear seat behind pilot. She is 58-yr-old.
Nirmala has spent a quality time travelling to Army, Air Force and Navy bases to understand their operations.
Talking about sortie in Sukhoi 30 MK, she has described the experience of flying Indian Aircraft as “eye-opening” and “memorable”. A Sukhoi-30 is capable of achieving a maximum speed of 2,100 km an hour — nearly four times more than a commercial airliner.
Only a few days ago, she was onboard the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya in the Arabian sea to witness the operations of the MiG-29 fighter off the deck of the ship and other Naval exercises.
