Director Shankar’s Career in Crisis After Back-to-Back Flops

Tamil director Shankar is currently facing the toughest phase of his career. Both Indian 2 and Game Changer, released with massive expectations, ended up as box office disasters. While every director faces flops at some point, Shankar’s back-to-back failures have not only disappointed audiences but also left producers in deep financial trouble. Reports even suggest that the money wasted on Game Changer’s unused footage alone could fund two or three medium-budget films. The exact losses incurred by Indian 2 producers are still being calculated.

Amidst this scenario, industry insiders feel it’s inappropriate for Shankar to continue making heavy demands. Yet, he seems unbothered, moving ahead with his “dream project” Velpari, a high-budget venture that he claims will require VFX on par with Avatar. This suggests that the project will demand a budget running into hundreds of crores. Shankar appears confident that his stature as a star director is intact and that any top actor would readily give him dates.

Interestingly, despite the failure of Indian 2, a section of the audience is still eager for Indian 3. If completed, it could help the production house, Lyca Productions, recover at least some of their financial losses. However, Shankar is reportedly demanding a hefty sum not just for his remuneration but also for the film’s making costs, which has made the producers hesitant to proceed. As a result, the future of Indian 3 now hangs in the balance, despite the trailer receiving a positive response and audiences expressing confidence in the film’s potential.

Adding to the frustration, Shankar previously paused Indian 2 midway to work on Game Changer, leading to both films getting delayed and eventually underperforming. Now, he seems to be sidelining Indian 3 as well, focusing entirely on Velpari. This decision has drawn criticism, with even his fans expressing displeasure over his approach and the ongoing disputes with producers.

Fans are still hoping that Shankar will bounce back with a strong film that reflects his trademark brilliance. Whether he can overcome these setbacks and deliver a hit remains to be seen — but for now, all eyes are on his next move.
