Vicky Kaushal Regrets Missing Out on ‘Stree’ Role
Bollywood is no stranger to stars turning down movies, only to regret it later. Whether it’s due to concerns about their image or doubts about the script, actors often pass on projects that end up becoming massive hits. However, Vicky Kaushal’s case is different. He didn’t reject a blockbuster out of creative differences or fear of being typecast. Instead, he simply couldn’t make time for it in his busy schedule. This decision, though, led him to become a part of a film franchise that has since crossed ₹1000 crore at the box office.
Currently basking in the success of Chhava, Vicky Kaushal recently opened up in an interview about his regret over almost missing out on a film that went on to become a cult classic. The movie in question? Stree, a horror-comedy directed by Amar Kaushik. Initially, Vicky was approached for the lead role, but at that time, he was already committed to Manmarziyan and had to pass on it. Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Vicky shared, “Amar described Stree to me while we were working on Manmarziyan, but I couldn’t provide him the dates. I still regret not being a part of that film.” Interestingly, Stree features the now-iconic line, “Vicky, if you don’t mind,” which was originally intended as a playful reference to him.
Released in 2018, Stree became an unexpected blockbuster, earning ₹180 crore at the box office. The film’s success paved the way for a highly anticipated spin-off, which reunited the original cast of Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao. The spin-off proved to be even bigger, shattering records and grossing ₹850 crore. Together, the two films in the Stree franchise have now crossed ₹1000 crore, placing them among Bollywood’s most successful horror comedies.
While Vicky Kaushal has enjoyed his fair share of box office hits, missing out on Stree remains one of those “what if” moments in his career. In Bollywood, one role can significantly change an actor’s career trajectory, and Stree became a game-changer for Rajkummar Rao. As the Stree universe continues to expand with more sequels and spin-offs in the works, one can only wonder how Vicky would have fit into that world, or if fate had a different plan for him all along.
