Chiru in Euphoria: Missed Boost or Right Call?

Senior director Gunasekhar, known for blockbusters like Chudalani Vundi and Okkadu, returned to direction with “Euphoria,” a film he also produced. Released last week, the movie earned appreciation for its core concept. However, the sluggish narration in the second half turned out to be a major drawback, resulting in poor footfalls at the box office. Amid the film’s underwhelming theatrical run, Gunasekhar’s recent revelation about approaching Megastar Chiranjeevi for a key role has now become a hot topic.
Gunasekhar reportedly revealed that he had approached Chiranjeevi to play the police officer’s role, which was eventually portrayed by Gautham Vasudev Menon. While some fans feel that the film would have gained more mileage and impact with Chiranjeevi in the role, others believe it might have altered the film’s emotional core completely.
“Euphoria” primarily revolves around a mother trying to guide her son away from a destructive path, drawing inspiration from sensitive real-life incidents. If a star of Chiranjeevi’s stature had stepped into the cop’s role, the narrative focus might have shifted into a full-fledged police drama. The emotional weight of the mother-son story and the social commentary could have taken a backseat, potentially diluting the film’s original intent.
That said, from a purely commercial standpoint, the presence of a megastar like Chiranjeevi—even in a cameo—would have undoubtedly boosted the film’s pre-release business. Table profits might have been secured with stronger theatrical and non-theatrical deals. As of now, the film’s financial outcome remains unclear, but trade circles suggest that its disappointing box-office performance could result in significant losses for the makers.
