Battling Piracy: The Growing Threat to Tollywood and the Film Industry

January 16, 2025

Piracy has long been a significant issue for the film industry, but as technology evolves, it has become an even more pressing challenge. Typically, advancements in technology lead to solutions for underlying issues, yet in the case of piracy, technology seems to be aiding its growth. A recent high-profile case involving Game Changer has brought the issue back to the forefront in Tollywood. The film has become a victim of extensive piracy, with incidents ranging from illegal cable broadcasts in Vizag to widespread distribution of pirated copies.

The fact that Game Changer’s makers filed a police complaint against 45 individuals signals a premeditated attempt to undermine the film, long before it even hit theaters. What’s alarming is the widespread availability of these pirated copies—found in places like private buses and in the hands of everyday people such as hotel chefs and hospital security guards. Producer Madhura Sreedhar even mentioned finding a security guard at a private hospital watching the pirated version on his phone.

This isn’t an isolated issue; films like Daaku Maharaj and Sankranthi Ki Vastunnam have also suffered due to piracy. The real challenge now lies in the rise of high-definition piracy, which is harder to combat and has far-reaching consequences. It highlights the urgent need for the industry to adopt more comprehensive strategies to address the issue collectively.

One major challenge is the global scale of film releases. Movies like Game Changer are screened on thousands of screens worldwide, making it difficult and expensive to trace the origins of pirated content. By the time piracy is detected, it is often too late, and the damage to box office collections is already done. This also devalues the efforts of all the professionals involved in the making of the film.

Piracy isn’t confined to theatrical releases; even international OTT platforms are struggling to protect their content from piracy. While encryption and watermarked copies provide some level of protection, they are not foolproof. Stringent enforcement is often lacking, making it difficult to fully safeguard the content. To tackle this issue, the film industry must explore innovative solutions such as blockchain technology for secure distribution, AI-powered piracy detection, and closer collaboration with governments and law enforcement agencies to dismantle piracy networks.

While initiatives like ETV Win have seen some success in combating piracy, there is still a long way to go. The industry needs a system that ensures a permanent solution to this menace. Ultimately, eradicating piracy requires collective action from filmmakers, production houses, OTT platforms, and audiences alike. Only through unified efforts can the industry hope to preserve the integrity and financial success of filmmaking in the digital age.
