However, the film faces some challenges. The makers need consent from Subbulakshmi’s heirs, who were reportedly hesitant earlier. Without approval, the story may have to be fictionalized. Additionally, while her life was deeply inspiring, it had relatively few dramatic twists, making it tricky to translate into a cinematic narrative—especially given her iconic status in Tamil Nadu.

M.S. Subbulakshmi is celebrated as a legendary devotional singer in India. She popularized ancient Shankaracharya classics like Bhaja Govindam, Prativada Bhayankara Annan’s Venkateswara Suprabhatam, and numerous Puranic and Ithihasic verses, including Vishnu Sahasranamam and Lalitha Sahasranamam. Beyond her music, her life had remarkable milestones: she starred in the 1940s film Meera, later giving up acting to devote herself entirely to music.

She earned praise from luminaries such as Jawaharlal Nehru, who famously said, “Who am I, a mere Prime Minister, before this Queen of Song?” She also performed for leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, who reportedly requested her to sing “Hari Tum Haro.”

The real challenge for the filmmakers will be weaving these episodes into an immersive, emotionally engaging narrative akin to Mahanati. Without careful treatment, the biopic risks becoming like NTR Kathanayakudu, where the protagonist’s achievements and high-profile interactions overshadow the emotional core. How the makers balance reverence, drama, and cinematic storytelling will be crucial.
