Kamal–Rajini Reunion to Go Vintage with Film Cameras?

March 2, 2026

The much-anticipated reunion of Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth is already generating tremendous excitement across the country. Now, a fresh update has taken the buzz to another level. Reports suggest that the project, tentatively referred to as KHxRK, may be shot using traditional film cameras instead of modern digital equipment.

If true, this decision would mark a bold creative choice. The makers are said to be considering a return to the classic filmmaking style of the 1980s and 1990s, when movies were shot entirely on film reels. Such a move is being viewed as a tribute to old-school cinema and could lend the film a rich, textured, and nostalgic visual appeal rarely seen in today’s digital era.

Director Nelson Dilipkumar and cinematographer Rajiv Menon reportedly experimented with film cameras even for the promotional content. However, due to tight timelines, the promo was ultimately shot in digital format.

If executed successfully, this reunion could signal a grand revival of vintage filmmaking techniques in contemporary Tamil cinema. At the same time, shooting on film comes with practical challenges — including longer processing times, complex editing workflows, and higher production costs.

With two legendary icons coming together and an ambitious technical approach under discussion, the project has already become one of the most talked-about ventures in Indian cinema. It remains to be seen how feasible this traditional method will be in today’s fast-paced production environment and how the final output shapes up in the months ahead.
