The Changing Face of Comedy in Telugu Cinema

Clean comedy has become a rarity in Telugu cinema, with recent films often resorting to cringe-worthy and borderline sleazy humor in the name of entertainment. The shift in comedy trends is evident, and while humor is subjective, filmmakers must ensure that their attempts at comedy don’t cross the line into discomfort.

A prime example of this is Laila, Vishwak Sen’s latest release, which was marketed as a comedy entertainer but ended up being filled with cheap humor. Audiences outrightly rejected the film, making it a disaster at the box office.

On the other hand, MAD Square presents its over-the-top and cringe comedy in a more palatable way, thanks to the exceptional performances of actors like Sangeeth Shoban and Vishnu Oi. The film’s teaser, released a few days ago, received an overwhelmingly positive response. Unlike Laila, MAD Square does not rely on sleazy humor. While some of its comedy punchlines may be cringe-inducing, they work because of the actors’ delivery and timing. The film maintains a balance, ensuring it doesn’t go overboard, which is why it is connecting well with audiences.

This trend isn’t new—last year’s Tillu Square followed a similar formula, proving that the audience now gravitates toward a different style of humor. The days of clean comedy entertainers seem to be fading, with movies like DJ Tillu and MAD shaping the new wave of Telugu comedy. However, the key lies in maintaining boundaries—if the humor crosses the limits, as seen in Laila, audiences will not hesitate to reject it.

As Telugu cinema continues to evolve, it remains to be seen whether clean comedy will make a comeback or if this modern, edgy style of humor will dominate the industry in the coming years.
