Due to a delayed release and mixed word of mouth, Nandamuri Balakrishna’s much-hyped mythological action drama Akhanda 2, marking his fourth collaboration with director Boyapati Srinu, failed to meet the high trade expectations at the box office.

However, the film has not completely lost momentum even two weeks after its release, as B and C centres continue to witness decent footfalls, especially on weekends and holidays.

After posting a respectable opening weekend, Akhanda 2 witnessed a noticeable drop in collections at multiplexes in A centres. Nevertheless, Balakrishna’s strong mass appeal has come to the film’s rescue in B and C centres. With most new releases failing to make an impact at the box office, Akhanda 2 continues to draw audiences to single screens, maintaining steady occupancies in mass pockets.

The film reportedly collected over ₹1 crore on each day during its second week. Benefiting from the Christmas holiday, it managed to gross more than ₹2 crore on Thursday alone. The total worldwide gross is now nearing ₹120 crore, and trade circles expect the film to perform well over the upcoming weekend and during the New Year holidays.

While Balakrishna’s intense performance and high-octane action sequences found favour with the mass audience, the overall output did not live up to the lofty expectations associated with the sequel. Despite its underwhelming run by sequel standards, Akhanda 2 has entered the ₹100 crore club, marking the fifth consecutive film in Balakrishna’s career to achieve this milestone.

That said, given the massive expectations and the tremendous pre-release business across territories, the box office target for Akhanda 2 was significantly higher than what it has managed so far. As a result, trade analysts are likely to classify the film as an average grosser, despite its impressive headline numbers.
