There is a lot to know about APJ Abdul Kalam and every small detail about him so inspiring. He will always hold a special place in people’s heart as a great human being rather than just as a Missile Man or People’s President.

10 Things You would love to know about Abdul Kalam:

1) Kalam used to live in a single-room flat before becoming President of India.

2) All the three Childhood Friends of Kalam (namely Ramanadha Sastry, Aravindan and Sivapraksan) were Brahmins.

3) Pakshi Lakshmana Sastry, the highest-paid priest of Rameswaram temple, is a close friend of Kalam’s Father.

4) Kalam is a music lover, especially enjoys the work of Carnatic music’s undisputed exponent MS Subbalakshmi. Even the legendary vocalist have high regard for Kalam and she would often serve home-cooked food for him with her hands, that too in a most traditional manner…eating food on banana leaves while sitting on the floor.

5) Kalam is a fan of Idlis & Pakodas.

6) Even though there is a provision of free air tickets for the kin of nominated President, Kalam was never interested in such privileges and he himself paid for the 2nd AC Train Tickets for family members.

7) Kalam refused to sit in a chair that’s meant for him at convocation at BHU upon noticing that his chair is bigger in size than that of others on the stage.

8) Kalam is against placing broken glass on the wall of buildings for security reasons just because birds would get hurt.

9) While addressing 400-odd students once, There was a power-cut but that didn’t make Kalam end his speech in a hush-hush manner. He asked the students to surround him and delivered and inspiring speech as usual.

10) Kalam invited a roadside cobbler (who repairs chappals) and owner of a small hotel as ‘Presidential Guests’ during his first visit as President to Kerala’s Raj Bhavan.
