In a devastating accident, at least 107 Hajj pilgrims died when a huge construction crane collapsed over the Masjid al-Haram (Grand Mosque) in the sacred place of Kaaba, Mecca, Saudi Arabia. As per the reports, it has been raining with heavy winds over the last few days, which might have made the crane snap the cables and smash through the roof of the holy mosque.
The surroundings of the mosque has been filled with the crying of injured pilgrims, who were stuck under the rubble. Mosque officials and paramedics have rushed the injured to local hospitals and the death toll is expected to rise slightly. The mosque was fully crowded with Muslim pilgrims from across the world on a Hajj pilgrimage which is towards the end of this month.
The Saudi Civil Defense Authority has employed relief teams and the investigation agencies have not divulged any reasons for the catastrophe until now. It was reported that more casualties would have been registered if the Al-Tawaf bridge did not stop the crane’s massive fall by blocking it with its covered walkway.
Meanwhile, the local Indian authorities are in talks with the Mecca officials to trace Indian casualties, if any.
