Avatar 3 ‘Fire and Ash’ Opens to Solid Global Box Office Start

The third instalment of the Avatar franchise, titled Avatar: Fire and Ash, made its grand global premiere on December 18, opening to a reasonably strong start at the box office.

According to early trade projections, the film is expected to register an opening weekend gross in the range of $340 million to $380 million worldwide. The domestic market in the United States is contributing approximately $90 million, while the remaining $250 million-plus is projected to come from international territories.

The film is currently on track to comfortably cross the $340 million mark, and if audience reception strengthens over the weekend, it could potentially climb closer to the $380 million range. While these numbers may appear modest when compared to the explosive openings of major Marvel and DC films, they still represent a better start than the first Avatar film.

Historically, films from the Avatar franchise have not relied on massive opening weekends. Instead, they are known for their slow-burn openings followed by exceptionally long and steady box office runs across global markets. James Cameron’s latest offering is expected to follow a similar trajectory with its third instalment.

However, the big question remains whether Avatar: Fire and Ash can eventually breach the coveted $2 billion milestone, a feat achieved by its predecessor, Avatar: The Way of Water. Given the mixed reviews emerging from its global premiere, reaching that benchmark will require an extraordinary sustained run and strong word-of-mouth in the weeks ahead.
