‘Thank God, I Acted At Peak Time’

When the radios were in vogue, it was the golden era for cinema says character artiste Kota Srinivasa Rao. Later, when television happened, it became a bane for the industry says he. “During our time, a lot of plays would be staged frequently. Since I loved performing, I would work in a bank by day and do plays on weekends and after work. Films are like unreachable grapes for all of us. Though I was capable of doing all kinds of roles on stage and proved my talent over and over, I could never imagine that my face would suit films.
However, late T Krishna gave me the big break with Pratighatana. I made my entry at a time when the industry boasted of good writer and directors. I could do a variety of roles and thoroughly enjoyed my stint.” Said Kota. “The actors had a healthy competitive spirit back then. I still get good roles once in a while. But I am relegated to working with Bollywood villains who have meatier roles. That is indeed sad, but then there is a severe dearth of good writers today,” says Kota recollecting good old times.
