Following the tragic passing away of the India’s favorite child and the ‘Missile Man’ Abdul Kalam, the entire world praised his magnanimity. Here’s a touching story that took the seeding about 25 years ago in Hyderabad when Kalam was working in the DRDL.
One day, Kalam asked his driver, a 19 hear old Kathiresan, about his educational qualifications. The teenager said that he failed in English in his 10th standard examinations. Even though Kalam was extremely busy with his work, he chalked out some extra time to educate Kathiresan and taught him English grammar. Kathiresan passed the exam and Kalam made Kathiresan join plus two, at his own expenses.
Soon, Kathiresan completed plus two and Kalam wanted him to take up computers for his graduation. However, scared of computers, Kathiresan joined BA History. Kalam then taught him World history, European history and World wars. Kathiresan came out with flying colors within three years and Kalam then made Kathiresan pursue his masters. The Bharat Ratna was once so worried about his driver’s exams that he even sent Kathiresan to Chennai on a flight to appear for his exams.
Finally, the once driver Kathiresan became doctor Kathiresan as he completed his PhD at the Sundaranar University in Tirunalveli, Tamil Nadu. Doctor Kathiresan now works as a lecturer at Tirunalveli government college and Kalam used to meet him whenever he used to visit Tirunalveli.
Deeply shattered with the demise of the light of his life, Kathiresan now left for Rameswaram to attend Kalam’s final rites.
