Tollywood 2024: A Year of Blockbusters and Misfires
2024 was a year of mixed fortunes for Tollywood, as the industry experienced its fair share of successes and disappointments. From massive blockbusters to unexpected flops, the year brought a range of performances across genres and star-studded releases. Here’s a month-by-month breakdown:
January
The year began with a Sankranthi showdown as HanuMan dominated the box office, overshadowing the highly anticipated Guntur Kaaram. Venkatesh’s Saindhav and Nagarjuna’s Na Saami Ranga failed to impress, with the latter managing only moderate success. Films like Sarkaru Naukari, Double Engine, Ram, and Premalo also failed to shine, leaving January as a challenging month for the industry.
February
February brought a string of disappointments. Suhas’ Ambajipeta Marriage Band showed promise but failed to connect with audiences. Yatra 2 and Ravi Teja’s Eagle also underperformed, though Ooru Peru Bhairava Kona offered some respite. Other releases like Siddharth Roy and Sundaram Master failed to make an impact, making February one of the most lackluster months of the year.
March
Thrillers like Bhootaddam Bhaskar and comedies such as Chari 111 fell flat, adding to the streak of underwhelming films. Varun Tej’s Operation Valentine and Gopichand’s Bhimaa also disappointed, while Vishwaksen’s Gaami earned critical appreciation despite limited commercial success. The month ended with a surprise as Tillu Square opened to strong reviews and box office numbers.
April
Despite being a traditionally favorable month for Tollywood, April saw multiple failures. Vijay Deverakonda’s The Family Star and Geethanjali Malli Vachindi were major letdowns. Smaller films like Bharata Natyam, Sriranga Neetullu, Tenent, and Market Mahalakshmi also failed to leave a mark.
May
May continued the streak of misfires, with Allari Naresh’s Ah Okkati Adakku and Suhas’ Prasanna Vadanam falling short of expectations. Films like Satyadev’s Krishnamma and Anand Deverakonda’s Gam Gam Ganesh also failed to impress. Vishwaksen’s Gangs of Godavari couldn’t meet commercial expectations, leaving the month devoid of major hits.
June
June brought a mixed bag. While big names like Sharwanand (Maname) and Kajal Aggarwal (Satyabhama) failed to draw audiences, Kalki 2898 AD stood out as a massive success, dominating the box office and saving an otherwise dull month.
July
Navdeep’s comeback in Love Mouli didn’t resonate with viewers, and films like Darling, The Birthday Boy, and Operation Ravan struggled to find success. However, Kalki 2898 AD continued its winning streak, overshadowing all other releases.
August
August offered a few surprises. While Allu Sirish’s Buddy and Shivam Bhaje failed to deliver, Committee Kurrollu and Aay emerged as surprise hits. However, big-ticket films like Mr. Bachchan, Double iSmart, and Maruthi Nagar Subrahmanyam faltered. Nani’s Saripodha Sanivaram became the highlight of the month with strong box office returns.
September
September witnessed the release of some notable films. 35 – Chinna Katha Kadu performed well, and Mathu Vadalara 2 benefitted from Satya’s impressive performance. However, Raj Tarun’s Bhale Unnade disappointed. The month ended on a high note with Devara: Part 1, which grossed over ₹500 crore globally.
October
The festival season brought mixed results. Sree Vishnu’s Swag and Sudheer Babu’s Ma Nanna Superhero underperformed, while Gopichand’s Vishwam turned out to be a disaster. However, Lucky Bhaskar and Ka emerged as hits, bringing cheer towards the end of the month.
November
Despite high expectations, November was a disappointment. Nikhil’s delayed Appudo Ippudo Yeppudo, Varun Tej’s Matka, and Satyadev’s Zebra failed to impress. Vishwaksen’s Mechanic Rocky and Roti Kapada Romance also struggled, making November a forgettable month.
December
The year ended with a bang as Pushpa 2 took the box office by storm, inching towards an unprecedented ₹1800 crore gross. Despite a few underwhelming releases like Bachhala Malli and Srikakulam Sherlock Holmes, Pushpa 2’s colossal success overshadowed all other films, ensuring 2024 concluded on a high note for Tollywood.
Tollywood in 2024 was a year of highs and lows, with a handful of films like Kalki 2898 AD, Devara: Part 1, and Pushpa 2 standing tall amidst a sea of disappointments. While the industry faced challenges, these standout successes demonstrated the resilience and potential of Telugu cinema.
