WhatsApp, the most popular messaging platform, has been served a legal notice, asking it to remove the “middle finger” emoji within 15 days. Emoji is a small digital image or icon used to express a feeling or emotion.
“Showing the middle finger is not only offensive but a highly obscene, lewd gesture. As per the Indian Penal Code, it is an offence in India to show obscene, lewd, offensive gestures to females,” a Delhi-based advocate mentioned in the legal notice.
“By offering to use middle finger emoji in your app, you (WhatsApp) are directly abetting the use of offensive, lewd, obscene gesture,” the notice said.
The lawyer requested WhatsApp to remove the middle finger emoji from the platform within 15 days. He also threatened of civil or criminal cases if the app doesn’t comply.The Facebook-owned social media platform hasn’t yet responded to the notice.
