A.R. Rahman Faces Mass Song Challenge in Peddi

It’s already known that music legend A.R. Rahman is composing for Peddi. After several years, Rahman is once again working on a Telugu film. Director Buchi Babu Sana personally chose Rahman, confident that only he could do justice to the film’s music. Buchi Babu has already revealed that Rahman has delivered some exceptional tunes. Bringing such a legendary composer on board for just his second film is no small feat — something many directors haven’t dared to attempt.

Given Rahman’s busy schedule, getting him to commit is a big achievement in itself. The director is highly confident about Rahman’s work. Interestingly, the film will also feature a full-fledged mass item song, reportedly inspired by folk music in the Srikakulam dialect. Since the story is set against a North Andhra backdrop, this style of song seems to have been a deliberate choice. The big question is — how well can Rahman deliver such a mass number? Connecting with Telugu audiences through a folk-based mass song will be a real challenge for him.

While Rahman has scored for Telugu films in the past, his recent work has leaned heavily toward Western-style compositions. In recent years, many of his songs haven’t clicked with mainstream Telugu audiences, resonating mostly with a niche group of music lovers. That’s why composing an item song in the Srikakulam dialect is no small task — and making it connect with the mass audience will be even tougher.

For a Mega family hero film, expectations for mass appeal are sky-high. Fans look for beats in the style of Aaata Kaavaalaa Paata Kaavaalaa, Rattalu O Sosi Rattalu, or Bangaru Kodi Petta. Rahman cannot afford to take risks here — he needs to deliver a high-energy, crowd-pulling mass beat. Capturing the mass pulse is essential, and the responsibility of motivating Rahman to achieve this rests squarely on Buchi Babu’s shoulders. How well he manages to ‘tune’ Rahman for this challenge remains to be seen.
