Oscars 2025 Set to Go Ahead Despite Wildfire Rumors

January 15, 2025

Recent reports have spread rumors about the possible cancellation of the 97th Academy Awards ceremony, set to take place in Hollywood on March 2, 2025, due to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, which have impacted several celebrity homes in areas like Pacific Palisades and Eaton. The story, which first appeared on UK tabloid The Sun, gained traction when it was picked up by Drudge Report, with a sensational headline: “OSCARS THREAT Oscars 2025 on verge of being cancelled as bosses secretly plot major changes to ceremony after LA wildfires.”

The report suggested that the Oscars could be canceled for the first time in the ceremony’s 96-year history due to the ongoing crisis. It even claimed that a secret contingency strategy was in place to call off the March 3 event, though it misquoted the actual date of the ceremony. However, The Hollywood Reporter has since investigated the claims and debunked the rumors. According to senior representatives of the Academy and other sources close to veteran stars, there are no plans to cancel the Oscars. Furthermore, there is no such advisory committee led by high-profile figures like Tom Hanks, Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, and Steven Spielberg, as was reported.

The only panel overseeing Academy operations is the 55-person board of governors, which does not include any of the individuals listed in The Sun’s report. The Academy has confirmed that there are no changes planned for the Oscars ceremony, and the date will remain March 2, 2025. The Board of Governors did, however, extend the Oscar nominations voting window, delayed the announcement of nominees, canceled this year’s Oscar Nominees Luncheon, and postponed the Scientific and Technical Awards in response to the crisis.

It’s important to note that any significant changes to the Oscars would require extensive consultation between the Academy and its broadcasting partner, ABC. Both the Academy and ABC are committed to moving forward with the show, planning a dignified ceremony that will also raise funds for fire relief efforts.

In fact, the Oscars have never been canceled, even during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the event was merely postponed and held in a scaled-back format. As it stands, the 97th Academy Awards ceremony will proceed as scheduled on March 2, 2025.
