Avatar: Fire and Ash – Mixed Early Reviews Ahead of India Release

The film Avatar: Fire and Ash has begun its screenings in the USA, and early reviews suggest a mix of opinions. While some critics describe it as one of the year’s most disappointing releases despite massive expectations, others praise the film for its visual grandeur and storytelling.

BBC was sharply critical, calling it “197 minutes of screensaver graphics, clunky dialogue, baggy plotting, and hippy-dippy new-age spirituality,” suggesting that James Cameron should consider stepping back. The review highlighted that the film struggles as a standalone story, feels overlong and self-indulgent, and lacks the excitement and novelty that made the original Avatar a phenomenon.

On the other hand, Variety critic Owen Gleiberman offered a more positive view, calling Fire and Ash superior to The Way of Water. He described it as “bolder and tighter,” praising its more dramatically focused narrative while noting it still delivers “its share of amazements.”

Vulture’s Bilge Ebiri called the film the “richest” installment in the Avatar franchise, emphasizing its immersive world-building and the way it encourages viewers to linger on both its characters and visually stunning environments. Polygon’s Matt Patches framed the film as a strong rebuttal to AI-generated “slop,” commending James Cameron and his visual effects team for their meticulous craftsmanship, emotional nuance, and dedication to physicality in digital creations.

With such polarized reactions—from sharp criticism to high praise—the buzz around Avatar: Fire and Ash remains strong. The film is set to release in India on December 19th, and it will be interesting to see how Indian audiences respond to this magnum opus from James Cameron.
