Rajinikanth: Five Decades of Unmatched Stardom

Superstar Rajinikanth’s enduring charisma and unmatched screen presence have made him a phenomenon for over five decades, says producer Lagadapati Sridhar. “Rajinikanth is a true superstar who rose from humble beginnings to dominate the big screen for 50 years,” Sridhar remarked. “His spiritual leanings and quest for inner peace have kept him grounded. For instance, his visit to Nepal broadened his image beyond that of just an on-screen icon.”

Sridhar highlighted that Rajinikanth’s recent speeches have evolved into life lessons—not only for his massive fanbase but also for the general public. “The craze for Coolie in Telugu-speaking states is a testament to his immense following. His Telugu films, including Tiger with NTR and Annadammula Savaal with Krishna, left a lasting impression. Later, blockbusters like Baasha, Muthu, Padaiyappa, and Chandramukhi turned into goldmines in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana,” he added.

Comparing Rajinikanth to legendary comedian Charlie Chaplin, Sridhar said, “Just like Chaplin, many imitators came and went, but the originality of the icon stood unmatched. Rajinikanth even made a mark in Bollywood with films like Andhaa Kanoon and Geraftaar, yet he remained rooted in Tamil cinema. He is the original pan-India star, with audiences eagerly awaiting his films across South and North India, as well as in the US, Europe, Singapore, and Japan. His fans treat him like a demi-god, and whenever he speaks on films, politics, or social issues, it resonates widely and sparks action.”

Sridhar emphasized Rajinikanth’s ability to connect with new generations. “His humility and honesty make his speeches go viral, earning mostly positive reactions. Off-screen, he travels simply, often spotted at airports with just a bag. This consistency in his on-screen and off-screen persona solidifies his status as India’s unbeatable superstar,” he said.

Only a few stars manage to remain relevant after turning 60, Sridhar noted. “Rajinikanth leads alongside Chiranjeevi in Telugu cinema and Mammootty in Malayalam cinema—actors who have transcended age and continued to make every release special for fans worldwide,” he added.

Director Hemanth Madhukar also commented, “Rajinikanth faced tough competition from Kamal Haasan over the last five decades. While Kamal excels in all types of roles, Rajinikanth carved his niche with anger-driven and stylish performances. By collaborating with young directors each decade, he consistently delivered hits and retained his dominance—a remarkable achievement.”
