From Poster Wars to Social Media Feuds: Fan Culture Today
Fan culture has always been intense, regardless of the era. In the 1980s and 1990s, fan rivalries often involved extreme actions, like throwing cow or buffalo dung on posters of rival heroes. These “fan wars” were primarily limited to such acts of mischief and tearing down each other’s posters.
Today, the intensity has shifted to a digital arena. While literal acts like throwing dung have disappeared, fans now engage in endless cussword exchanges and arguments on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. This 24/7 online war between fan groups often wastes time and spreads negativity.
Caste-based favoritism and extreme loyalty toward certain heroes continue to fuel these conflicts. A well-known director once observed that extreme fandom can reflect underlying issues such as low self-esteem, inferiority complexes, and even lower emotional or intellectual maturity.
While appreciating a hero’s talent is natural, blind fanaticism that turns disruptive is a sign of immaturity. Admiration should inspire respect and positivity, not social nuisance or hostility.
