Ramya Krishnan’s Iconic Neelambari Journey
Ramya Krishnan’s portrayal of Neelambari in Narasimha remains one of the most iconic roles of her career. Known until then for her soft and charming characters, Ramya’s transformation into a fierce and unapologetic antagonist surprised audiences. Director K. S. Ravikumar spotted this potential in her and crafted a role that could stand toe-to-toe with Superstar Rajinikanth’s character. One of the film’s most talked-about scenes was when Neelambari steps on Soundarya’s cheek — a moment that became a cinematic highlight.
Normally, no director would risk such a bold scene between two leading actresses, but Ravikumar took the gamble for the sake of drama. Soundarya’s full cooperation made it possible, as Ramya initially felt hesitant about performing such an act with a fellow actress. In fact, Soundarya herself encouraged Ramya to go ahead, even taking her foot and placing it on her cheek to break the ice.
Interestingly, it was later revealed that Ramya Krishnan wasn’t the first choice for Neelambari. Ravikumar initially approached Meena, but felt her innocent face wouldn’t do justice to the role. He then considered Nagma before finalizing Ramya, believing she had the perfect attitude and presence to bring Neelambari to life.
Even today, fans often express their wish for a sequel in the Narasimha style, but Ravikumar has yet to give any confirmation.
