India’s Ministry of Home Affairs has introduced two new visa categories—‘e-student visa’ and ‘e-student-x visa’—to facilitate the entry of international students pursuing higher education in India. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to attract and enhance the study experience for foreign students. Applicants are required to use the government’s ‘Study in India’ (SII) portal for visa processing.
The e-student visa is available to foreign nationals who have secured admission to recognized higher educational institutions in India and are registered on the SII portal. In addition, the e-student-x visa allows dependents of e-student visa holders to join them during their academic journey in India.
The SII portal plays a central role in simplifying the admission process for international students, offering both long-term and short-term academic programs. While visa applications must be submitted through the official Indian visa portal, they will only be processed after validation via the student’s unique SII ID. Registration on the SII portal is a mandatory step in the application process.
Upon receiving admission from an institution affiliated with the SII portal, students can apply for the e-student visa. This visa is valid for the entire duration of the academic program—whether it’s undergraduate, postgraduate, or doctoral—and can be issued for up to five years, with options for extension while in India.
A notable feature of the e-student visa is its flexibility, allowing holders to enter India through any authorized immigration checkpoint, improving accessibility for international students.
The ‘Study in India’ initiative, led by the Ministry of Education, has partnered with more than 600 institutions, offering over 8,000 courses in fields including engineering, management, sciences, law, agriculture, and humanities. The initiative aims to position India as a global education hub, providing students with diverse academic options and access to leading institutions.
The SII portal streamlines the process by enabling students to register, apply for admission, and track the progress of their applications and visas online. Creating a unique SII ID is essential, as it helps students manage various stages of admission, visa approval, and other formalities.
