Grok, the AI assistant from xAI, has been launched as a standalone app, extending its reach beyond the X platform. This move comes after a limited rollout in December 2024, allowing users to access the assistant without needing an X Premium subscription. The app retains the conversational tone X users are familiar with—described as “humorous and engaging”—and includes features such as text summarization, image generation, and question answering.
Previously exclusive to X Premium subscribers at $8 per month, Grok is now available in a free tier. This tier permits users to make up to 10 requests every two hours, along with three image analysis requests per day, though similar limitations may apply to the standalone app.
The app offers flexible sign-in options via Apple, Google, X accounts, or email. However, it’s unclear if X Premium users will enjoy additional benefits when using the standalone app. Grok stands out by addressing “spicy questions,” a feature other AI assistants tend to avoid, and includes a version of its model as open-source software, appealing to developers and researchers.
While the app boasts a simple and intuitive interface, with capabilities such as image generation and text summarization, it shares common challenges with other AI assistants, such as occasional inaccuracies and strange image outputs. Despite these hurdles, Grok’s unique features and open-source availability may attract a diverse audience, though its ability to deliver on its bold promises remains to be fully evaluated.
