Suchitra Krishnamoorthi’s Joke That Shocked Ram Gopal Varma
Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, the former wife of filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, once shared a humorous incident about making a joke regarding marriage with director Ram Gopal Varma. In her autobiography Drama Queen, she recounted how she casually asked Varma if he would marry her, but he took it far too seriously.
Suchitra jokingly sent him a message saying, “Will you marry me?” which made Ram Gopal Varma panic. He immediately called her to his office, visibly concerned, and tried to talk her out of what he assumed was a serious proposition. According to Suchitra, Varma expressed that he was more attracted to women for their looks than their intelligence, and he wasn’t interested in marriage at all.
In an interview with Bollywood Thikana, Suchitra clarified that it was all in jest. She laughed at the situation, admitting that no one could seriously consider marrying Ram Gopal Varma. She also emphasized that despite his panicked reaction, he was a kind person.
Suchitra fondly remembered how Varma took her words at face value, inviting her to his office to explain that he wasn’t the right man for her, assuring her that he was a good person. She finally had to reassure him that it was just a joke, and nothing serious was meant by it.
Suchitra had worked with Ram Gopal Varma in films like My Wife’s Murder and Rann. She was married to Shekhar Kapur from 1999 to 2007, but their marriage ended bitterly, with Suchitra later accusing Shekhar of infidelity.
