A R Rahman Faces Renewed Backlash and Plagiarism Claims

Ever since A R Rahman made remarks about what he perceived as communal bias in Bollywood over the past eight years, the legendary composer has faced sustained backlash. Political groups, right-wing supporters, and sections of film audiences have openly trolled the Oscar-winning musician on social media. Although Rahman later issued a clarification, the criticism has continued unabated.

In recent weeks, netizens have revisited old international pop tracks and drawn comparisons with Rahman’s classic compositions, alleging similarities in melodies and arrangements. Some critics claim that he adapted older foreign tunes by reworking them with contemporary synths and production techniques. There are also renewed allegations suggesting that Rahman reused base compositions associated with Punjabi singer Sukhwinder Singh, reshaping them into fresh film songs.

Widely regarded as one of India’s greatest composers, A R Rahman transformed Indian film music and earned global recognition, including an Academy Award. However, decades into his celebrated career, he now finds himself facing plagiarism allegations once again, reviving a long-standing and contentious debate around originality and influence in film music.
