Can an actor romantically pair with an actress in one film after portraying her father or daughter in another? Will audiences accept such casting decisions? Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan recently addressed this controversial topic, shedding light on a long-debated issue in his career.
In a candid conversation with The Lallantop, Aamir revealed that he had serious disagreements with his producers over the casting of Fatima Sana Shaikh in Thugs of Hindostan. She had earlier played his daughter in Dangal, and later appeared as his love interest in Thugs of Hindostan. “I never believed the audience would view it negatively. We were underestimating their intelligence,” Aamir said, adding that such casting is quite normal in cinema.
However, audiences didn’t respond favorably. The film turned out to be one of Aamir’s biggest flops, and one reason many cited was the awkwardness of the casting. What added fuel to the fire were rumors that Aamir and Fatima were dating in real life. Despite several clarifications, both from him and his team, the chatter hasn’t died down, and Aamir still finds himself having to explain.
He also revealed an interesting behind-the-scenes detail: no top actress was willing to take on the role Fatima eventually did in Thugs of Hindostan. “We approached everyone—Katrina, Deepika, Kareena, and many others—but none agreed. That’s when we finalized Fatima,” he explained.
Aamir admitted that the film’s frequent script changes and flawed execution contributed to its failure. Despite warning the producers, including Aditya Chopra and director Vijay Krishna Acharya, the team went ahead with their creative choices.
In hindsight, Aamir Khan sees Thugs of Hindostan as a lesson. The film stands as one of the biggest disappointments in his career, and the casting choice with Fatima still follows him—both professionally and personally.
