Aamir Khan Reflects on Thugs of Hindostan Flop and Career Impact

During a promotional interview for Sitare Zameen Par, Aamir opened up about his biggest flop, Thugs of Hindostan, calling it a heartbreaking failure. “I had high expectations from the film,” he revealed, “but it ended up being my biggest disaster. It took me a long time to process that failure.”

He also admitted that although the original script was good, last-minute changes weakened the story. “Normally, I’m against making such changes,” he said, “but back then we had to.” Aamir also accepted his part of the responsibility for the flop, along with director Vijay Krishna Acharya and producer Aditya Chopra.

Reflecting on the film’s making, he shared that even before its release, the team had mixed feelings. The scale was enormous — Thugs of Hindostan was reportedly made on a ₹350 crore budget — a huge number at the time. Given Aamir’s star power, everyone assumed it would easily earn ₹500 crore, but it turned out to be one of Bollywood’s biggest box-office disasters.

Although it grossed ₹50 crore on its opening day, negative reviews resulted in a steep drop-off, and the movie eventually ended its theatrical run earning only around ₹150 crore. The film’s failure caused massive losses for the production company and dealt a severe blow to Aamir’s career. Ever since then, he’s been cautious about signing big-budget projects.
