Aamir Khan has announced an unconventional release strategy for his latest film Sitaare Zameen Par. Instead of opting for the usual OTT platforms, the actor-producer is set to release the film directly on YouTube Movies. Starting August 1, audiences in India will be able to watch the film on demand at an affordable price of ₹100. The release will also cover 38 other countries, including the US, UK, and Australia, with localized pricing for each region. Subtitles and dubbed versions in multiple languages will be available to ensure a wider reach.
Speaking at a press conference in Mumbai, Aamir explained the reason behind this decision.
“If a family of four watches the film for ₹100, that’s just ₹25 per person. You could even invite your neighbors,” he said. “When I was young, we used to watch movies together like that. Watch it with eight people — it gets cheaper. Show it to an entire village, and it’s just ₹1 per person. The idea is to make it accessible and affordable for everyone.”
He further clarified his stance on skipping traditional streaming platforms: “I never liked the OTT model or fully understood it. That’s why I came up with this new distribution method. I hope people appreciate it. Cinema has the power to soar, and I believe it will soar again.”
Directed by RS Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par is described as a spiritual sequel to Aamir’s 2007 classic Taare Zameen Par. The film follows Aamir in the role of a basketball coach who trains a group of neurodivergent children. Released in theaters on June 20, the movie has already grossed over ₹250 crore worldwide.
