Seetha Payanam & S. Saraswathi: When Big Names Fail in Telugu Cinema

March 9, 2026

Telugu audiences are open to films in any language and welcome filmmakers from other industries. However, many directors from outside the Telugu industry often treat it as an opportunity to test their luck, and sometimes they fail to connect with the audience. Two recent examples illustrate this trend.

Action King Arjun recently directed Seetha Payanam, introducing his daughter Aishwarya as the heroine. Despite a strong cast, good production values, and aggressive promotions by Arjun and Aishwarya, the film failed to attract the expected attention. Similarly, Varalakshmi Sarath Kumar turned director with S Saraswathi, featuring notable actors and music by Thaman, backed by ETV Win. Yet, the film struggled to make an impact due to poor execution.

Both films highlight that Telugu audiences prioritize entertainment, regardless of genre or story. The key factor is effective presentation. Outdated filmmaking techniques and weak narration in Seetha Payanam and S Saraswathi resulted in underwhelming responses, despite the directors’ strong acting backgrounds in Tamil cinema.

For other actors or directors experimenting in the Telugu market, understanding the audience and presenting films in an engaging, contemporary manner is crucial. Without careful attention to storytelling and execution, even talented filmmakers may face setbacks in this competitive industry.
