Abhishek Sharma made history with a blistering 20-ball half-century as India defeated England by seven wickets in the first T20 of their five-match series on Wednesday. The 24-year-old left-handed batter smashed 79 runs off 34 balls, hitting five fours and eight sixes, as he led India to a commanding win at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. India chased down England’s total of 132 all out in just 12.5 overs, finishing at 133-3.
Sharma’s impressive knock included eight sixes, setting a new record for the most sixes by an Indian batter while chasing. He took on some of England’s top bowlers—Mark Wood (2 sixes), Adil Rashid (3), Jamie Overton (1), Jofra Archer (1), and Gus Atkinson (1)—with a strike rate exceeding 200. The previous record for most sixes in a chase by an Indian was jointly held by Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Axar Patel, all of whom had hit six sixes in such innings.
During the post-match presentation, Sharma credited his success to the unique environment in the dressing room, saying, “I wanted to express myself, but a special mention to captain Suryakumar Yadav and coach Gautam Gambhir for the tremendous freedom they have given us as youngsters.”
