South Korean Defence Minister Ahn Gyu-back visited the 3rd Special Forces Brigade on Monday in his first on-site inspection since taking office, pledging to restore the morale and honor of troops mobilized during former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s failed martial law attempt.

During his visit to the elite unit under the Army’s Special Warfare Command, Ahn emphasized his commitment to ensuring that affected soldiers can return to their core duties with renewed stability. “I will take necessary measures so that special forces troops and other soldiers who were deployed for the martial law bid can concentrate on defending the country, by restoring their stability and honor,” Ahn stated, according to the Ministry of National Defense.

Ahn, a five-term lawmaker, recently became South Korea’s first civilian defense minister in 64 years, following the resignation of former minister Kim Yong-hyun amid controversy surrounding the brief martial law imposition on December 3.

Reaffirming the military’s need to remain politically neutral, Ahn underscored the importance of focusing on external threats, particularly North Korea’s advancing nuclear and missile programs. He also highlighted the strategic value of the South Korea–U.S. alliance, describing it as a “linchpin” of national defense and committing to strengthening bilateral defense cooperation.

In line with broader security goals, Ahn reiterated South Korea’s dual-track approach of enhancing deterrence while keeping diplomatic channels open to support peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
