Air India has taken a significant step towards enhancing passenger experience by becoming the first airline in Asia to integrate Apple AirTag with its baggage-tracking system and mobile app. This new feature allows customers using Apple devices to track their luggage in real-time, ensuring greater transparency and security.
The integration is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices running iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, or macOS 15.2 or later. By leveraging Apple’s cutting-edge technology, Air India aims to provide its passengers with seamless baggage-tracking capabilities, reinforcing its commitment to digital innovation.
Enhanced Baggage-Tracking Features
Air India’s existing baggage-tracking system already offers real-time updates through its mobile app and website. Customers who add their flight details in the ‘My Trips’ section of the app can automatically access baggage status once their luggage is checked in. Additionally, passengers can use the ‘Track My Bags’ feature by scanning their baggage receipt barcode for instant updates.
“At Air India, we continue to innovate and introduce cutting-edge digital capabilities as part of our customer-centric approach. As we transform into a world-class global airline, we are excited to offer our guests an innovative option to help locate their baggage in case it does not arrive at the destination on schedule,” said Dr. Satya Ramaswamy, Chief Digital & Technology Officer at Air India.
Expedited Recovery Process for Misplaced Baggage
With over 100 million items of baggage transported annually, Air India reports that more than 99.6% of items arrive with their respective passengers. However, in the rare event of misplaced baggage due to airport system issues, flight misconnection, or other factors, the new AirTag integration is expected to significantly expedite the recovery process.
In case of delayed or misplaced baggage, passengers can report the issue at Air India’s Baggage Counter at the airport. Staff will assist in filing a Property Irregularity Report (PIR). Customers can then share the AirTag location link via Apple’s ‘Find My’ app, associating it with the PIR through the Air India mobile app or website. This enables authorised airport staff to locate and reunite the baggage with the passenger more efficiently.
Privacy and Security Measures
To ensure passenger privacy and data security, Air India has implemented robust measures in the baggage-tracking system. Location sharing automatically ends once the baggage is reunited with the passenger or after seven days. Passengers also have the option to manually stop sharing the location at any time.
Addressing Customer Concerns on Baggage Handling
Despite these technological advancements, Air India has been frequently criticised for its baggage-handling reliability. According to the website LuggageLosers.com, which tracks airline baggage loss statistics through social media reports, Air India has been ranked as one of the least reliable airlines, reportedly losing approximately one in every 41 bags.
The airline’s new integration of Apple AirTag aims to improve customer confidence by providing an additional layer of security and transparency in baggage tracking. By leveraging modern technology, Air India seeks to address passenger concerns and enhance its reputation in baggage handling efficiency.
As Air India continues its transformation into a global airline, this pioneering initiative positions it at the forefront of digital innovation in the aviation sector, offering passengers greater control and peace of mind regarding their luggage.
