Albanese Urges Labor MPs to Stay Focused on Serving All Australians

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called on the newly elected members of the Australian Labor Party to maintain a “laser-like focus” on delivering for all Australians, as the party begins its second term in government following a decisive federal election victory.

Speaking at the first meeting of the Labor caucus since the election, held in Canberra on Friday, Albanese welcomed the party’s new parliamentarians and emphasized the importance of serving both those who voted for Labor and those who did not.

“We want to see them lifted up and given opportunity,” the Prime Minister said. “We seek power in order to deliver for the people who need Labor to be in government.”

Albanese reaffirmed his government’s commitment to its campaign promises, stating that parliament will resume at the end of July. His first legislative priority, he confirmed, will be the introduction of a bill to reduce higher education student debts by 20 percent—a key Labor pledge during the campaign.

In preparation for the new term, Albanese is set to announce his second-term cabinet on Monday, ahead of the official swearing-in ceremony with Governor-General Sam Mostyn on Tuesday.

However, changes in the cabinet lineup are already emerging. It was revealed on Thursday that Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus and Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic—both prominent figures in Albanese’s first-term cabinet—will not return in the new ministry.

The Prime Minister’s renewed call for unity and purpose within the party reflects a broader commitment to inclusive governance as Labor embarks on its new mandate.
