Alleged H1B Visa Scam Sparks Panic Among Indian F1 Students in US

Work permit visas in the United States have become increasingly difficult to secure, and the outlook does not appear promising in the near future. Adding to the growing anxiety, a fresh controversy has emerged following reports of an alleged H1B visa scam that has triggered panic among Indian F1 students in the US.

According to reports, several international students working under Optional Practical Training (OPT) were approached by companies that claimed to offer guaranteed H1B sponsorship. However, after gaining the students’ trust, these firms allegedly demanded large upfront payments to initiate the visa process.

The companies reportedly asked students to bear H1B filing charges and legal expenses running into thousands of dollars, while also insisting that they use a specific private attorney. Immigration experts have clarified that under US law, employers are not permitted to transfer mandatory H1B filing and legal costs to employees. Any such demand is considered illegal and exploitative.

Fearing the loss of legal status and facing limited job opportunities, many students allegedly agreed to these terms, believing it was their only option to remain in the US. Legal experts have warned that entering into such arrangements can result in visa rejection, long-term immigration bans, or even deportation.

In response, student associations are urging F1 students to remain extremely cautious, thoroughly verify employers, and avoid any sponsorship offers that involve personal payments. They are also encouraging victims to report such fraudulent practices to the authorities.

As scrutiny around visa misuse intensifies, this incident once again underscores the vulnerability of international students within the US immigration system and the urgent need for awareness and legal clarity.
