After a few years of courtship, the two tied the knot in June 1973 — a decision that came earlier than planned, prompted by a conversation with Amitabh’s parents.
Reflecting on their marriage during an episode of her granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda’s podcast, What The Hell Navya, Jaya revealed a personal condition set by Amitabh regarding her professional life. “He told me, ‘I don’t want a wife who works 9 to 5. Please work, but not every day. Choose your projects and work with the right people,’” she shared. The couple had originally planned to marry in October to accommodate Jaya’s shooting schedule, but when Amitabh’s parents insisted on a formal union before the couple went on a vacation, the wedding was moved up to June.
Post-marriage, Amitabh went on to redefine Indian cinema with his legendary career, while Jaya took a more selective approach to acting, choosing roles that aligned with her priorities as a wife and mother. Despite stepping back from the limelight, she continued to leave an indelible mark on Indian cinema with powerful performances.
