Andhra Pradesh Assembly to Seek Legal Sanctity for Amaravati as Capital

The Andhra Pradesh Assembly is set to convene a Special Session on the 28th of this month to adopt a resolution urging the Union Government to grant legal sanctity to Amaravati as the state’s capital.

After the previous experiment with the three-capital plan under Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is determined to secure legal status for Amaravati. However, the move faced procedural hurdles, prompting the Centre to suggest amendments to the CRDA 2014 resolution. The upcoming Special Session aims to address these issues, ensuring a smooth legal process before Parliament grants formal recognition to Amaravati as the capital.

The key question now is the strategy of the YSR Congress Party. The party has previously avoided Assembly sessions, citing the absence of an Opposition Leader, and initially supported the three-capital plan. Public opposition, however, drastically reduced their influence, leaving them with just eleven seats in key areas. Even in Visakhapatnam, the party failed to make a mark.

It remains to be seen whether Jagan Mohan Reddy will maintain the same stance. In past instances, he has addressed Assembly issues through the media even when skipping sessions. If he refrains from doing so this time, it could indicate that he is still keeping options open regarding the capital. Effective mobilization by Telugu Desam Party and JanaSena Party could deliver a significant political setback to YSR Congress, particularly in Krishna and Guntur districts.

In March 2025, Botsa Satyanarayana, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, stated that the party would review and clarify its current policy on the capital, acknowledging that the three-capital approach had been shaped by circumstances at the time. Since then, however, no official update has emerged, while Jagan has continued making critical remarks about Amaravati at select press events.
