Anil Ravipudi on Self-Judgement, Comedy Timing and the Changing Filmmaking Landscape

Successful Telugu filmmaker Anil Ravipudi, known for delivering eight consecutive commercial hits, recently shared insights into his creative process during Gulte’s Directors Roundtable 2025. The interactive discussion also featured noted directors Deva Katta, Chandoo Mondeti, Sailesh Kolanu, along with debut filmmakers Ram Jagadish (Court) and Sai Marthand (Little Hearts).

Reflecting on the constant judgement a director faces from script development to theatrical release, Ravipudi revealed that he does not rely solely on his own assessment while shaping a film. “For my films, the judgement doesn’t come from me alone. At the script stage, I sit with a group of people and observe their reactions. I can’t wait for the release to know whether something is working,” he said.

Emphasising the importance of diverse feedback, the director added that he is open to showing his work to a wide range of viewers. “Some filmmakers hesitate to screen their films to others, but I show scenes to anyone, even those who aren’t strong critics. I closely watch their responses and laughter, and make corrections wherever necessary.”

Ravipudi also highlighted that comedy remains one of the toughest genres to evaluate. “Audience reactions can change drastically even on two consecutive days, which can be confusing. This happened with my last film Sankranthiki Vasthunnam too. At such times, you have to trust your instinct,” he explained.

Beyond creative challenges, the roundtable touched upon the evolving logistics of filmmaking, the growing influence of artificial intelligence, and the increasing impact of negative trends on social media. During the discussion, Ravipudi also briefly spoke about the progress of his upcoming film Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu, which stars megastar Chiranjeevi and Venkatesh.

The full interview offers candid insights and thoughtful observations from some of the most prominent and promising voices in Telugu cinema today.
