Anirudh Ravichander’s Music at a Crossroads

Share

Anirudh Ravichander has long been celebrated as one of India’s most dynamic and bankable music composers, often known for elevating even lackluster films with his electrifying soundtracks and powerful background scores. Over the past decade, his unique style and chart-topping numbers have earned him a dedicated following across the country.

However, his recent work in 2024 and 2025 has sparked debate among fans and industry watchers alike. Despite working on high-profile projects such as Indian 2, Devara, Vettaiyan, Vidaamuyarchi, Kingdom, Coolie, and Madharaasi, only Devara and Coolie managed to make a significant impact musically. The rest of his compositions have been criticized for lacking freshness and innovation.

Many listeners feel that Anirudh’s music is beginning to sound repetitive, with several tracks coming across as rehashed versions of his earlier hits. The same critique extends to his background scores, which were once praised for their intensity and originality but now seem to follow familiar patterns. This shift has led to growing concerns that audiences are experiencing fatigue with his signature style.

The disappointment surrounding Madharaasi further amplified this narrative. With the film itself receiving mixed reviews, fans had hoped Anirudh’s music would be its saving grace. Instead, it delivered neither a standout chartbuster nor a memorable score, leaving many underwhelmed.

Given his proven talent and past success, the current criticism doesn’t necessarily indicate a decline in his abilities, but it does highlight the need for reinvention. As one of the country’s most sought-after composers, Anirudh now faces the challenge of breaking away from familiar formulas and experimenting with fresh sounds to re-energize both his music and his audience.
