Annamayya Spurious Liquor Racket Puts CM Naidu, TDP in Political Heat

A major spurious liquor racket unearthed in Annamayya district has put Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in a politically sensitive position.

The racket, busted at Mulakalacheruvu in Thamballapalle constituency, revealed an organized network producing and distributing fake liquor under popular brand names. Acting swiftly, TDP State President Palla Srinivasa Rao, following CM Naidu’s directives, suspended Thamballapalle ACI Jayachandra Reddy and local TDP leader Katta Surendra Naidu. The party also announced a detailed internal inquiry, emphasizing that it would not tolerate any act endangering public health.

In a high-level review meeting at his Undavalli camp office on Sunday, Naidu was briefed on how the racket was uncovered. Excise officials, acting on a tip-off after detaining individuals with spurious liquor, conducted raids at Kadirinathunithota village near Mulakalacheruvu, uncovering an illicit manufacturing unit. Investigations revealed the involvement of 14 individuals, of whom 10 have been arrested. Fake labels, liquor bottles, and manufacturing equipment were seized from the site.

Officials confirmed that the liquor was supplied to Andhra Wines in PT Samudram and Rock Star Wines in Mulakalacheruvu, both of which were sealed after the raids. The vehicle used for transporting the bottles belonged to T. Rajesh, the licensee of Rock Star Wines. The operation reportedly spanned multiple states, with workers recruited from Tamil Nadu and Odisha, and functioned like a fully operational factory. The prime accused, Janardhan Rao, is currently abroad, while investigations continue into the role of local TDP leader Jayachandra Reddy.

Naidu expressed serious concern over the racket and directed the Excise Department to probe the matter thoroughly, ensuring strict action irrespective of the accused’s political connections.

Meanwhile, the opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) launched a strong attack on the ruling party. YSRCP State General Secretary S.V. Sathish Kumar Reddy alleged that the large-scale operation could not have existed without top-level protection. He highlighted the seizure of nearly 60,000 liquor bottles and the discovery of a fully functional manufacturing unit on a national highway as evidence of systemic government negligence.

Sathish Kumar Reddy further noted that Surendra Naidu, arrested in connection with the racket, has been a loyal TDP supporter since 1983, claiming he acted as a front for the operation. He demanded that the Chief Minister identify the real masterminds and clarify the protection they enjoyed.

The scandal has put Naidu in a politically precarious position, challenging him to ensure accountability within his party while restoring public trust in law enforcement. The unfolding controversy casts a shadow over the government’s image as a law-abiding and reform-driven administration.
