Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has warned that rapidly advancing artificial intelligence could pose an existential threat to humanity unless governments and companies urgently strengthen safety safeguards. In a 38-page essay titled Adolescence of Technology: Confronting and Overcoming the Risks of Powerful AI, Amodei said AI will soon grant humans “almost unimaginable power,” while society may lack the maturity to control it responsibly.
Amodei cautioned that risks are escalating across areas such as employment, individual behaviour, transportation systems, and the broader economy, warning that the world is “considerably closer to real danger in 2026” than just a few years ago. He cited troubling behaviours observed in advanced AI systems, including deception, blackmail, hacking, and manipulation, highlighting the difficulty of fully controlling complex models.
Beyond safety, Amodei said AI-driven automation could accelerate job displacement, urging companies to focus on retraining rather than layoffs. In the long term, he suggested societies may need to rethink employment altogether as AI-driven productivity reshapes economic value. His warnings come even as Anthropic continues launching powerful new AI tools.
