Director AR Murugadoss has landed in controversy after his recent remarks sparked backlash from Telugu audiences. During the promotions of his upcoming film Madharaasi, Murugadoss commented on the difference between Tamil and Telugu cinema, stating that films crossing the ₹1000 Cr mark are largely made for entertainment, while Tamil films aim to educate audiences.
“1000 Cr directors only entertain, but Tamil directors educate people. There is a big difference,” said Murugadoss. His statement did not sit well with many, who felt it was a subtle dig at Tollywood, a film industry that has consistently delivered mega blockbusters touching the ₹1000 Cr milestone.
Interestingly, Madharaasi’s lead actor Siva Karthikeyan expressed a contrasting opinion at the film’s pre-release event in Hyderabad. He credited Tollywood’s massive successes to the confidence of producers. “If producers believe in the content, they don’t hesitate to invest heavily, which is why Telugu films often make 1000 Cr at the box office,” Siva said, also praising producer NV Prasad for backing Madharaasi with a big budget.
The difference of perspective between the director and actor is quite evident. While Murugadoss emphasized that a filmmaker’s responsibility is not just to entertain but also to educate, Siva highlighted the commercial reality—producers seek returns, and success at the box office is what truly matters.
In fact, the Tamil film industry itself has been struggling to find its footing. Legendary directors like Shankar and Mani Ratnam haven’t been able to fully connect with today’s audience, while even new-age filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj faced disappointment with Coolie. Meanwhile, Tollywood continues to reinvent itself and dominate commercially.
With Madharaasi releasing on September 5th, many are closely watching how Murugadoss’s latest outing will perform. Having faced a series of flops in recent years, including Sikander in Hindi, the director is keen to make a strong comeback—while a section of the audience is equally eager to criticize if things go wrong.
