In a recent media interaction, the Oscar-winning composer opened up about why he embraced Sufism and converted to Islam.
During a podcast with Nikhil Kamath, Rahman shared that he is a fan of all religions and had studied Islam, Hinduism, and Christianity before adopting Sufism and changing his name from Dilip Kumar to AR Rahman. He emphasized that the real issue lies in harming or killing people in the name of religion. Rahman noted that during his live performances, people of different faiths and languages come together to celebrate, highlighting the unity that music brings.
Rahman also explained why Sufism attracted him. He described it as “dying before dying” and clarified that no one is forced to follow the path of Sufism. He revealed that the Sufi path not only spiritually uplifted him but also had a positive impact on his mother. For Rahman, the commonality of faith and the sincerity with which people embrace their own religion are what matter most.
