Australia has opened registrations for its MATES (Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme) visa, creating a unique opportunity for young Indian graduates to live and work in the country for up to two years without requiring employer sponsorship.

The ballot registration for the 2025–26 intake began on November 1, 2025, and will remain open until December 14, 2025. Under this initiative, 3,000 primary applicants will be randomly selected each year to apply for the visa, with a registration fee of AUD 25.

Eligible Indian nationals aged 18 to 30 who have graduated on or after November 1, 2023, with a Bachelor’s, Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s, or Doctoral degree from an institution ranked in the Top 100 of the NIRF India Rankings Overall 2024, can apply. Applicants must apply from outside Australia and must not have previously held a Subclass 403 (MATES stream) visa.

The MATES visa allows selected candidates to live and work in Australia for up to two years and even bring eligible family members, who are not counted within the annual cap. Applicants are not required to secure a job offer before entering the ballot.

The scheme targets graduates from sectors such as renewable energy, mining, engineering, ICT, artificial intelligence, fintech, and agri-tech — industries identified as key growth areas for Australia’s future workforce.

Positioned as a short-term mobility and skill-building opportunity, MATES helps Indian professionals gain valuable international work exposure, potentially paving the way for future migration or long-term career opportunities in Australia.
