A cybercrime complaint has been lodged against actors Nandamuri Balakrishna and Prabhas, accusing them of promoting the illegal betting app Fun88. The alleged endorsement took place during an episode of Unstoppable Season 2, where Balakrishna was the host and Prabhas along with Gopichand appeared as guests.
The complaint was filed by a Nellore resident, Sriram Babu, who claims to have lost ₹80 lakhs through the platform. He alleges that celebrity endorsements misled him and many others into investing in fraudulent betting schemes. Authorities are currently investigating the case under the Telangana Gaming Amendment Act.
This controversy comes amid a growing crackdown on illegal betting apps across Telugu states. According to Sriram Babu, he initially made ₹3 lakhs in profits through the app, which encouraged him to invest more. However, over time, he took loans from multiple sources and ended up losing everything, leading to severe financial distress. Frustrated by his losses, he directly blamed Balakrishna for promoting the app, arguing that celebrity endorsements influenced people into making risky financial decisions.
Telangana RTC MD, Sajjanar, has been actively campaigning against illegal betting apps, bringing attention to the devastating financial losses suffered by many. Recently, several celebrities, influencers, and social media personalities have been accused of endorsing such platforms. Hyderabad police have already registered cases against Rana Daggubati, Manchu Lakshmi, and Prakash Raj for similar allegations.
Sriram Babu reportedly first approached the Hyderabad police to file his complaint. However, he claims that instead of taking action, the police threatened to arrest him for engaging in betting, which is also illegal under existing laws. As investigations progress, this case is likely to add to the ongoing debate on celebrity responsibility in endorsing financial platforms.
